The reason I teach it to young students is because it develops critical thinking. That is a skill used in all subjects of school, all aspects of life and will serve them no matter what occupation they choose.  Better problem-solvers will continue to be in high demand regardless of the economy or innovation.
Chess is not a fad. The game is centuries old and for good reason! It is easy to learn, challenging to master, played worldwide, and beneficial. And the students say, "This is FUN!"
